Regency Enterprises, Film4 Productions, Fox Searchlight Pictures Age Certificate: 15 IMDb: 8.1/10 Rotten Tomatoes: 95/100 Plot Solomon Northup, a free African-American, is promised a fortnightly job by Brown and Hamilton. However, after arriving in Washington DC, he realises that he has been sold into slavery. Review I watched this film for the BFI Film Academy and was astonished from beginning till end. The first 15 minutes had so much depth that it took an hour analysing the mise-en-scene, the editing, the narrative etc. A truly emotional story with an amazing cast; especially Chiwetel Ejiofor, the main lead. This story captures the true essence of what it was like for the victims of slavery in 1853, giving us the view of how the black community were treated during the time. Films are made for our knowledge and understanding; this film does more than just portray the lives of black people; it brings awareness to people of different race. My rating: 8.5/10 ...

FILM RECOMMENDATIONS: SUPERHERO (1978-2018)

Warner Bros. Pictures Age Certificate: 12 IMDb: 7.5/10 Rotten Tomatoes: 71/100 Plot The Dark Knight of Gotham City begins his war on crime with his first major enemy being Jack Napier, a criminal who becomes the clownishly homicidal Joker. Review One of the best superhero films of the decade; when it was first announced that Michael Keaton will play the dark crusader, the audience were not convinced that a comedian could portray a dark vigilante such as Batman. Yet, Keaton steps in the role of Batman, regardless of the audience's initial response to him, and delivers one of the best Batman performances in film history. But what gave the film its positive reviews was Jack Nicholson who took on the role of the iconic villain, the Joker. Nicholson is considered one the best actors of our generation, coming from the film 'The Shining (1980)', it was already evident that Nicholson was fit to play another villain such as the Joker. This film was the reason why I lo...

FILM RECOMMENDATIONS: NOSTALGIA (1971-2009)

20th Century Fox Age Certificate: PG IMDb: 7.9/10 Rotten Tomatoes: 90/100 Plot Edward, a synthetic man with scissor hands, is taken in by Peg, a kindly Avon lady, after the passing of his inventor. Things take a turn for the worse when he is blamed for a crime he did not commit. Review Like how you would know you're watching a Christopher Nolan film based on the practical effects that is used on a large scale or watching a Michael Bay film from the number of explosions you see on screen, you would recognise Tim Burton's signature style in film. It is what differentiates his films from others and is called 'Burtonesque' because of the specific aesthetic he has for all his films. The visual aesthetics for this film is filled with bright coloured houses whereas the main character, Edward, has a dark academia look to him. The contrast of the film conveys that the town people are friendly whereas Edward is not. However, that is not the case when you watch the film...
