'AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR' (2018) REVIEW

Since this film is not just a film but a cinematic event experience, here's what I thought about it.

This was pretty much Thanos' story; not in his perspective but every scene always linked back to his character. He was the main character; being mentioned at least once in every scene. He's not the stereotypical antagonist who wants to take over the universe but bring balance. I thought survival was the end goal for him and so if half of the universe is gone, there will be balance and survival will no longer be an issue as he has somewhat mentioned in the film.

UPDATE: Recently Kevin Feige reported that half of the plant resources and animals have also been affected by Thanos' snap. Thinking about it, wouldn't it be pointless if half of the universe's resources are gone? Poverty will still exist.

Also, with the large number of characters in this film, it was obvious that not all of the protagonists will get the same amount of screen time as each other. As much as fans would have loved all the characters so far seen in the cinematic universe be together or have a lot of screen time, the pacing, and the storylines that the Russo Brothers have created made sense for the narrative to progress into part 2.

The visual effects were spot on, it is one of the most expensive films to produce. I was worried about the motion capture aspect and the CGI, especially for Thanos as the CGI was criticised when the teasers came out. However, Josh Brolin who portrays Thanos was brilliant (which, by the way, all done in motion capture). He really did bring Thanos to life.

The narrative was spectacular even when it's a film of this scale - over 20 superheroes (or over 100 according to Anthony Mackie). So of course not everyone got a fair amount of screen time which was criticised but can you blame them?

After all the press coverage and media publicity, it will go onto being in the top 5 grossing films this year and of all time, maybe beating 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' (2015) and hopefully 'Avatar' (2009).

UPDATE: Avengers: Infinity War has grossed over $2.040 billion, making it the first highest grossing film in 2018 and the fourth highest grossing film of all time.

The Russo brothers have given Elizabeth Olsen 'Wanda Maximoff' a lot more screen time than usual. She played a crucial part to the story as she is one of the most powerful superheroes out there (in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and in the X-Men universe) alongside Thor and Doctor Strange. That is why she deserves more screen time.

Scarlet Witch is so underrated, honestly, she was the highlight of this film.
If anyone thought these two (Groot and Rocket) did nothing in the film, well... they've contributed a lot more than you think. Helping Thor retrieve the Stormbreaker to defeat Thanos? What would Thor do without them.

If it's not obvious already, I am a Scarlet Witch fan and I'm just glad Elizabeth Olsen was given a bigger role this time. Her character has always been interesting to me (she's supposed to be 'weird' and always judged by others) and the Russo brothers knew where to go with her story. Lastly, this film already proves that she is one of the most powerful avenger so I'm waiting for a Scarlet Witch spin off film. Also, the Winter Soldier and Groot spin offs.

UPDATE: The Black Widow spin off film just recently got a female director and I'm glad they're making films about the avengers who do not have powers but are still fascinating to explore especially when there have been flashbacks about Nat's early life (before the Avengers).

What I would like to see in an Avengers film is the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Bring them home. Fox better give back Fantastic Four to Marvel. Send X-Men and Deadpool whilst you're at it.

Watch the film in IMAX if you really want a full cinematic experience. The Russo brothers said that the whole of 'Infinity War' was filmed using IMAX cameras whereas they only filmed the airport battle/scene from 'Captain America Civil War' (2016) in IMAX so expect more action.

I can't wait for Avengers 4 which will arrive in cinemas next year in May and  we're are yet waiting on the title for the film and from what I know, they are currently re-shooting for the film. In the meantime, 'Antman and the Wasp' comes out in August and 'Captain Marvel' will be released early in 2019.

IMDb rating: 9.2/10
My rating: 9/10

**********

This is my first attempt of a review so hopefully, it was okay. I will be posting more reviews soon. Currently, I am still writing up a review for 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom'.

I'm also planning on watching 'Incredibles 2' and 'Antman and the Wasp' in cinemas soon so I will be writing reviews for them too. 📽

Lastly, I will put up some movie recommendations for anyone who want to watch during the summer holiday - from cult classic films to recent releases, there will be a lot of films that have positive reviews, good storylines, some underrated films, and many of those will be my personal favourites. 😃
