Film and TV - Sabina Begum

This film was fun and an adventure. There are many things that I loved even though I was one of those people who went in to watch it as 'just-another-film' rather than my having a 'this-is-freakin-star-wars' moment. I was still excited as I am a huge Sci-Fi fan but I knew this was more of a heist film. Regardless, I still enjoyed the space adventure aspect which includes its use of visual effects and PRACTICAL effects/props. Director, Ron Howard said during an interview that the cast had the opportunity to interact with the set props. For example, they didn't have to visualise a hyperspace scene during filming as they were able to see on a screen in front of them on set during the 'hyperspace' moment. It's a shame that many sets do not use a lot of props and practical effects because of advanced technology and the use of digital effects. In my opinion, the first film was really good but I think I went in to the movie theatre without knowing much about Deadpool or Ryan Reynolds. I was expecting something like the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). I knew that he was a comedic character and an anti-hero but I was still expecting a typical Marvel film. I did find it funny but there were many references and funny moments I did not understand when I first watched it because they were mainly about Green Lantern and the 2009's Deadpool which I did not know much about like the negative reviews it received so the jokes about Ryan's previous characters were not as humorous to me as they were to other people. With the first film 'Gnomeo and Juliet' doing well at the box office and receiving mixed reviews, the sequel does not succeed nor does it do well commercially and critically. It underperformed at the box office and received negative reviews. Though my sister enjoyed this film due to its tone and the 'humour' it provides, the film lacks many things. I thought the humour was 'okay'. I only laughed a few times but those moments are forgettable. The only memorable scene was the nepotism joke in the beginning. Comedy is an important genre to present in this film to engage children but this film failed to do so. However, the action aspect of the film managed to keep the audience engaged. Other aspects the film lacked was the storytelling which is the main part of any film. Since this film is not just a film but a cinematic event experience, here's what I thought about it. This was pretty much Thanos' story; not in his perspective but every scene always linked back to his character. He was the main character; being mentioned at least once in every scene. He's not the stereotypical antagonist who wants to take over the universe but bring balance. I thought survival was the end goal for him and so if half of the universe is gone, there will be balance and survival will no longer be an issue as he has somewhat mentioned in the film. UPDATE: Recently Kevin Feige reported that half of the plant resources and animals have also been affected by Thanos' snap. Thinking about it, wouldn't it be pointless if half of the universe's resources are gone? Poverty will still exist. Growing up, I used to unintentionally analyse films; discussing the practical and digital effects with anyone in the room as well as watching behind the scene videos of my favourite films. The constant need to let my brothers know how certain scenes were shot every time we watch a film and then researching further into the production led to my passion in films studies. At the of 3, my uncle sent us 80's and 90's films on VHS... some of what I remember were 'Terminator', 'Star Wars' and even an old TV show from the 60's called 'Captain Scarlet'.
